On July 24^th, you can join the Adult Reading Center board members and staff at H-E-B plus! in Pearland to watch some expert cake decorators do their thing. Icing will be flying! Roses by the hundreds will be made! There will be no limit on imagination!  But, best of all, you can bid on and take home one of the fabulously decorated cakes to enjoy.

Kids can even decorate their own cupcakes for just $1.00!  All proceeds from the event will benefit the Adult Reading Center!

Saturday, June 11th Pearland Community Center 5:30 pm – happy hour & tourney check-in 6:00 pm – dinner served 7:00 pm – tournament play begins   The evening includes a Spring Creek Barbeque dinner, drinks, (beer/margaritas/sodas), door prizes, Texas Hold’em tournament play and raffle.   As you progress in tournament play to the final table, you will earn raffle tickets for some great prizes.   $50 donation per player includes tourney entry, dinner, drinks, door prizes & raffle tickets.   $30 donation includes dinner, drinks & door prizes for spectators.   The Texas Hold’em tournament is raising funds for the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship sponsored by Keep Pearland Beautiful.  Each year, we award scholarships to  Pearland High School and Dawson High School graduating seniors.

A & A Cleaning Services understands that fight against breast cancer is long and hard.  We want to do everything we can to support those with breast cancer.  That is why we have created our  “Cleaning For A Cause” program.

With the Cleaning For A Cause program, A & A Cleaning Services commits to set aside 3 FREE residential cleanings per month for those who have breast cancer.

Each year, the Pearland Parks & Recreation Department hosts SUMMERFEST, a free summer concert series held every Friday evening in May & June at Southdown Park (2150 Countryplace Parkway) in Pearland.

Currently, the Special Events division is looking for a team of four to five volunteers each evening of the series to join the Event Parking Committee. The Event Parking Committee will be led by veteran volunteers of the department and will teach the basics of traffic control and parking management to all volunteers.

Volunteer requirements:
Must be age 18 or older and able to volunteer from 6pm-8pm on one or more of the following Fridays in 2011: May 6, May 13, May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17 or June 24.

Spring Cleaning….

Just the thought of it can often feel overwhelming. Here are a few tips from us to help you organize, divide and conquer your spring cleaning!

TIP #1: Make a list of the areas you would like cleaned. We suggest the following areas:
* Wash baseboards
* Dust fans
* Steam clean or shampoo carpets
* De-clutter (donate old clothes, toys, etc)
* Organize kids rooms, garage

TIP #2: Start with the smallest room first. This can help keep your momentum going and encourage you to continue cleaning!

TIP #3: Don’t try to do everything in one day. You are more likely to do a better job cleaning if you form a plan of action of a period of two or more days. This way, cleaning will not feel so overwhelming and you’re more likely to do a better job!

TIP #4: Organized your closet by getting rid of unused clothes and accessories.  Try organizing the rest of your closet by how you get dressed in the morning and by color.

TIP #5: To clean painted walls, use a clean cloth or sponge and water. If that doesn’t work, dip the rag or sponge into water mixed with a little dishwashing liquid (the milder the better!)

A & A Cleaning Services’ Owner, Mona Chavarria is Awarded Adult Education Volunteer of the Year From the Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education

PEARLAND, TX, February 5, 2011:  On Thursday, February 3, 2011,  Mona Chavarria, owner of A & A Cleaning Services, received the Adult Education Volunteer of the Year Award from the Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) which honored Chavarria for her work in adult literacy with the Adult Reading Center in Pearland, TX.

Nominated by Adult Reading Center Executive Director, Dale Pillow, Chavarria was chosen as Adult Education Volunteer of the Year from a large pool of literacy volunteers across the state of Texas. “Mona Chavarria exemplifies the term volunteer.” Pillow stated. “She is committed to making our community a literate community. “

“I am so honored to receive the Adult Education Volunteer of the Year Award,” said Mona Chavarria.  “Literacy is my passion. It makes such a strong impact, not only in an individual’s life, but in the community as a whole. It has the ability to make dreams come true.”

Chavarria has been involved in literacy for over 15 years.  She worked at the Houston READ Commission for over 11 years, in their Finance Department functioning as the CFO. Chavarria has also served on the Adult Reading Center’s Board of Directors for 5 years, as the board President for 2 years, and is currently the Board Treasurer. Chavarria has served as past-Chairwoman of the Adult Reading Center’s Annual Red Hat Literacy Luncheon, is a sponsor each year, and has increased the visibility of this event and the Center through her social network which includes being an Ambassador for the Pearland Chamber of Commerce and serving on their Board of Directors.

In addition to the Adult Education Volunteer of the Year Award, on January 27, 2011 Chavarria’s company A & A Cleaning Service was awarded “Best Cleaning Service in Pearland/Friendswood” from The Pearland Journal.
